Tasmanian band, The Neo Now has another song in the pipeline. It’s about to be released in early August.
What it means to be a Tassie band is that we have our own sound. Being a Tasmanian band or even a Tasmanian is a perspective as much as a lifestyle. We live at the bottom of the world, at the bottom of Australia. But do we really? Who drew up those maps in the first place? The world is a globe, it doesn’t have a top or a bottom. We love the series of advertisements from a Tassie company called St Lukes that shows a map of Australia turned upside down with Tasmania at the top. Imagine | St. Lukes Health (stlukes.com.au) That’s why we say being a Tassie band is a perspective. Naoko was at an event recently about the AgriVision 2050 which has an aim to grow the Tasmanian agriculture sector to $10b by 2050. That means more awesome farm gate markets and healthy food for all Tasmanians. There’s some smart people living in Tassie, with some big ideas about future potential, innovation and sustainability. It’s an exciting time. This year our mate’s son put up a song on Triple J Unearthed and it has been getting play. Good on him. It encouraged us to give Triple J our 2023 ‘Away from U’ track. We love that song, it’s got some driving rock guitar and it’s punchy. The Away from U video is short and sweet – the footage runs forwards at a speedy pace then flips and runs backwards. The video style reflects the lyrics, where two people are running towards each other, then running away from each other and things are altogether confusing in their relationship. Sounds like real life? Yeah. The song on the vid is just the demo version while we were working on the 2023 release. It marked a new era of The Neo Now, being the first track off our up-coming third album. Triple J Unearthed asked what other bands The Neo Now sounds like. People have said we sound like The Go Betweens, and the B52s and people have even compared us to Fleetwood Mac. Some songs do but then a lot of our songs are different from each other. When someone called us acoustic pop, we grabbed hold of that. We kind of have our own sound. There’s definitely a theme with the pacey carnival piano sounds that pop up in many songs by The Neo Now. We alternate female and male lead, we harmonise, we’re about to introduce spoken word into some of the new songs, we’re experimenting in the studio and getting immersed in our art. Living the dream.
